What’s up, Hungry People?

Today we’re taking a trip to Republic City, where Amon and the Equalists have taken control. In the midst of this turmoil, Korra and the rest of Team Avatar find refuge in Gommu’s underground base. Here, benders and non-benders coexist peacefully. Gommu, in his excitement to have some company, quickly whips up a special treat for his guests: street gruel, or as he likes to call it, Gommu’s soup!

A Taste of the Streets

Gommu’s soup is “culled from the finest dumpsters the city has to offer.” Now, for street-smart individuals like Mako and Bolin, who grew up on the rough streets of Republic City, or even Korra, who isn’t afraid to catch and eat fish straight from the lake, the origin of their meal may not be a big deal. However, for privileged folks like Asami, the idea of eating a dinner that came from the trash might be a tad…disgusting.

Recreating the Flavor

While my recipe for Gommu’s hobo stew may not have the same origin as his, I assure you that the flavors hold true. Although I didn’t scavenge my ingredients from dumpsters, I did manage to use up a bunch of half-used and soon-to-expire items from my own fridge. So, it’s safe to say that this soup captures the essence of real street gruel.

Here’s What You Need

  • Chicken breasts: Provide protein and add meaty flavor to the soup.
  • Beef broth: Acts as the base for the soup, infusing it with rich, savory flavors.
  • Egg noodles: Add texture and substance to the soup, creating a hearty and filling dish.
  • Potato: Adds starchy thickness and a mild earthy flavor to the soup.
  • Tomato: Provides acidity and a touch of sweetness, enhancing the overall taste.
  • Green bell pepper: Adds a fresh, crisp element and subtle sweetness to the soup.
  • Onion: Contributes aromatic and savory flavors, forming the base of the soup.
  • Carrot: Offers sweetness and adds color, while providing a slight crunch to the soup.
  • Garlic: Adds a pungent, aromatic kick and depth of flavor to the soup.
  • Butter: Enhances the richness and adds a smooth, creamy mouthfeel to the soup.
  • Bay leaves: Infuse the soup with a subtle herbal note, which is removed before serving.

Let’s Cook!

Here’s what you need to do: Start by browning the chicken in a large pot until it’s seared on all sides. Then, toss in the chopped potatoes, carrots, and onions with a touch of butter. Let them cook until the potatoes start to soften and become tender.

Next, add the chopped peppers, tomatoes, and garlic to the pot. Pour in your choice of broth and bring it to a simmer.

Once the stew is gently boiling, add the egg noodles and bay leaves. Let everything simmer until the noodles reach that perfect al dente texture.

Don’t forget to remove the bay leaves before serving, though! They’re not meant to be eaten.

Enjoy Your Bowl of Rebellion!

Serve up a steaming bowl of Gommu’s hobo soup to your hungry benders and non-benders alike. We’re all in this fight against the Equalists together! Remember, even if you’re not a bender yourself, you definitely don’t want someone like Amon in charge of… well, anything.

Tips for Making Gomu’s Street Gruel

  • Browning the chicken: Make sure to brown the chicken well to develop rich flavors before adding the other ingredients.
  • Sautéing vegetables: Sauté the onions, potatoes, carrots, and green bell pepper until they are slightly browned and tender for added depth of flavor.
  • Cooking time for noodles: Be mindful not to overcook the egg noodles. Cook them until they are al dente, as they will continue to cook slightly in the hot soup.
  • Adjusting seasoning: Taste the soup before serving and adjust the salt and pepper levels according to your preference.
  • Customize with spices: Feel free to add herbs or spices such as thyme, paprika, or crushed red pepper flakes to enhance the flavor profile of the soup.
  • Storage and reheating: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of broth or water to thin out if needed.
  • Serving suggestions: Garnish the soup with fresh herbs like parsley or a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese for an extra touch of flavor.
  • Vegetarian/Vegan options: Substitute the chicken and beef broth with plant-based alternatives, such as tofu or mushrooms, and vegetable broth, to make a vegetarian or vegan version of the soup.
  • Experiment with add-ins: Feel free to get creative and add other vegetables or proteins like corn, peas, or cooked sausage to personalize the soup to your liking.
  • Double the recipe: This soup freezes well, so consider making a larger batch and freezing individual portions for easy meals on busy days.
