“What are you doing with all those books anyway?” Ron asked.
“Just trying to decide which ones to take with us,” said Hermione. When we’re looking for the Horcruxes.”
“Oh, of course,” said Ron, clapping a hand to his forehead. “I forgot we’ll be hunting down Voldemort in a mobile library.”

– Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

If you aren’t caught up on the Harry Potter series (and let’s be honest, why are you here if you haven’t?) be warned, there may be mild spoilers throughout this post!

The Deathly Hallows represent the three super-powerful magical objects that, when combined, allow the holder to conquer Death.

Harry Potter is the only known wizard to have ever been officially the owner of all three Hallows, though never at the same time. I’d like to think that after the Battle of Hogwarts and the defeat of Voldemort, the Hallows took on a new meaning—hope for the future of the wizarding world. These cookies help represent the overcoming of death, as the witches and wizards who fought hard to save the world from Voldemort, and many lost their lives doing so.

I’m hopeful that the Deathly Hallows will make an appearance in the next Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movie. Dumbledore and Grindelwald sought them out together, after all. In fact, I’d be more surprised if the Elder Wand doesn’t take a more prominent role in one of the next four Fantastic Beasts movies!

Here’s What You Need:

  • Flour: Provides structure and volume to the cookies.
  • Graham Flour: Adds a nutty flavor and crunchy texture.
  • Brown Sugar: Sweetens the cookies and contributes to their moistness.
  • Butter: Adds richness and helps in achieving a tender crumb.
  • Molasses: Deepens the flavor with its warm, spicy notes.
  • Graham Cracker Crumbs: Enhance texture and extend the graham flavor.
  • Baking Soda: Acts as a leavening agent, helping the cookies rise.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances overall flavor with its sweet, aromatic profile.
  • Egg: Binds the ingredients together and helps in structure.
  • Powdered Sugar: Used for dusting; adds a sweet finish.
  • Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances other flavors.

Let’s Cook

Here’s how we can conjure up some deliciousness straight from the wizarding world to our muggle kitchens!

Starting the Magic: Mixing the Dough

Preheat Your Cauldron (or Oven): First things first, let’s fire up our cauldrons—set your oven to 350°F. It needs to be hot enough to handle some serious potion-making… I mean, baking.

Creaming the Core Ingredients: Grab your stand mixer and toss in the butter and packed brown sugar. Add a dash of vanilla extract and crack in an egg. Mix these until they’re as smooth and fluffy as a well-cared-for Hippogriff.

Combining the Magical Elements: Adding Dry Ingredients

Whisking the Dry Mix: In a separate bowl, let’s whisk our flours together—both regular and graham—along with the graham cracker crumbs, baking soda, and a pinch of salt. This mix is going to give our cookies that perfect crumbly texture that even a house-elf would love.

Merging the Mixes: Turn your mixer down to low and begin to enchantingly drizzle in the molasses. Once it’s fully incorporated and looking fluffy, gradually add your bowl of dry ingredients, about half a cup at a time. We want everything to combine without losing that light, airy spell we’ve cast.

Shaping the Symbols: Forming the Hallows

Chilling the Potion: Once your dough is mixed, it should be smooth and not sticky. Flour a surface, knead the dough gently, then roll it into a ball.

Forming the Hallows: Take chilled chunks of dough—about 2-3 tablespoons each—and roll them into snake-like shapes, roughly 6-8 inches long. Shape these snakes into triangles on your baking sheet. If you’re feeling particularly artsy, add a single strip down the center of the triangle to represent the Deathly Hallows symbol.

The Final Enchantment: Baking and Finishing Touches

Baking the Cookies: Slide your trays into the oven and let them bake for about 10-15 minutes.

Cooling and Decorating: Once done, let them cool slightly on the pan before moving them to a cooling rack. If you’ve opted for the magical dusting, now’s the time to sprinkle them with powdered sugar.

          Magical Tips for Perfect Cookies:

          • Pre-measure ingredients: This ensures that the baking process goes smoothly and prevents any mistakes in the heat of the moment. Take a cue from potion making at Hogwarts—precision is key!
          • Creaming butter and sugar: Make sure your butter is at room temperature for the best creaming results. This is crucial for incorporating air into your dough, which gives your cookies their light, fluffy texture.
          • Chilling the dough: Don’t skip this step! Chilling helps prevent the cookies from spreading too much during baking and also makes the dough easier to handle and shape into the Deathly Hallows symbol.
          • Rolling and shaping: If the dough becomes too soft or sticky while shaping, pop it back into the fridge for a few minutes. Remember, we’re aiming for the perfect Hallows symbol, not an accidental Horcrux!
          • Baking time watch: Every oven is different, so start checking your cookies a few minutes before the time’s up. They should be golden but not too dark—think of the golden snitch, not a bludger!
          • Cooling: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack. This helps them set and makes handling easier without risking the Dark Mark of a broken cookie.

          Ingredients

          • 2 cups flour
          • 2 cups graham flour
          • 1 cup brown sugar packed
          • 1 cup butter room temperature
          • ½ cup molasses
          • 3 tablespoons graham cracker crumbs
          • ¼ teaspoon salt
          • 1 teaspoon baking soda
          • 1 teaspoon vanilla
          • 1 egg
          • 1 cup powdered sugar optional, for topping

          Instructions

          • Preheat the oven to 350°F. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter, brown sugar, vanilla extract, and egg until smooth and fluffy.
          • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, graham flour, graham cracker crumbs, baking soda, and a pinch of salt.
          • With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour in the molasses and beat until fluffy. Gradually add the dry mixture, about 1/2 cup at a time, until fully combined.
          • Continue to mix the dough on low until a smooth dough forms—it shouldn't stick to the sides of the mixing bowl. Tip the dough out onto a floured surface, knead a few times, then roll it into a ball. Chill in the refrigerator for about ten minutes.
          • Pull off 2-3 tablespoon-sized chunks of dough. Roll into a snake-like shape, about 6-8 inches long. Form each snake into a triangle shape and place on a baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough, and create a single strip down the center of each triangle to complete the Deathly Hallows symbol.
          • Bake for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown and puffed slightly. Remove from the oven and let cool on a rack. Dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve in celebration of You-Know-Who being defeated. Enjoy!
